When school starts for the first time, it is a major milestone. Even if they have siblings who have already gone through it, sending a child to preschool for the first time can be nerve-racking. As a parent, it’s normal to feel some first-day-of-school jitters about preschool. Taking care of your child’s feelings while also preparing them can be challenging.
A child’s first day of pre-K is a significant event filled with many emotions for their family. Fortunately, there are ways to alleviate the stresses of the first day and make the transition smoother—and it all starts at home.
Here are nine tips for a successful first day!
How to Help Your Child Get Ready for Preschool
1. Sort out your feelings beforehand
Managing mixed emotions is crucial in reducing stress for kids on their big day. It’s not the only way to ensure a great first day of preschool. While it can be normal to have mixed emotions on your child’s first day of preschool, it’s important to process these feelings beforehand. This way you can present a strong, calm front on the first day.
2) Visit the school together
One think that can help eliminate some of the scary unknowns for both your child and you as a parent is to visit the school together. Show them each classroom, especially if you know which one will be theirs. Give them time to get a good sense of their surroundings.
This will not only help them feel comfortable, but it will also give you an understanding of their day-to-day life. Call the school to ask if you can find a time to take your child for a visit.
3) Let them pack something from home
Packing a little of home gives them a sense of security and familiarity. Tell you child ahead of time that they will have this item. It could be a family photo, a stuffed animal, or even a little nicknack that they see everyday at home.
4) Get a good morning routine plan
A good school day always starts at home! While getting a good morning routine down is important, don’t overstress or overdue it. Let it happen naturally with some intentionality.
Maybe this means pausing at breakfast to ask them what they are excited about for the day. Or you could read them something short each morning. Children get security from repetition. Don’t forget to hug them before they leave each morning!
5) Don’t talk about it too soon
It is easy to want to be prepared. But let your child enjoy the summer. Talking about it too early could cause more nervousness.
Remember, if you think it is a big deal, then so will they. Try to be extra calm and only talk about it when you need to. For example, back to school shopping is generally a good time to discuss going to school.
6) Let them have some control
This can be hard for some parents, but it is important in early childhood. It can also be fun! Let you child pick out a backpack and a lunch box.
They could also request a specific lunch or breakfast. This can help them feel excited and in control.
7) Mimic preschool routines
It could be a fun activity with your little one to play school! Integrate the rules and routines that they could experience and make it fun! With this method, you can both become accustomed to what your child will experience on a day to day.
8) Practice their day — add in something fun
This can go with mimicking their rules and routines. Run them through each step of their day. This way they can be prepared and feel in control.
9) Don’t sneak out — or linger too long
This may very some with each child. But sometimes it’s best to let the child to see you leave rather than thinking you are still near by. But whether you sneak out or not, don’t linger too long. Instead of giving your child security, it can make them unsure and uncertain.
Tips for After the First Day
The first day of preschool is a big milestone, but the transition doesn’t end there. The days that follow are just as important in helping your child adjust to their new routine. Here are some tips to ensure a smooth continuation:
1. Establish a consistent routine
Keep the morning and evening routines as consistent as possible. Children thrive on repetition and predictability, so maintaining the same routine will help them feel secure. Ensure they get enough rest and have a calm morning to start their day off right.
2. Talk about their day
Engage your child in conversations about their day. Ask open-ended questions like, “What was your favorite part of today?” or “Did you make any new friends?” This encourages them to express their feelings and helps you understand their experience.
3. Celebrate small wins
Acknowledge and celebrate the small victories, such as making it through the day without tears or trying something new. Positive reinforcement builds confidence and encourages them to look forward to school. Encourage them to make friends and celebrate when they do!
4. Be patient with emotions
Understand that your child might still experience a range of emotions in the days following their first day. They may be excited one day and anxious the next. Be patient and provide comfort, reassuring them that it’s okay to feel however they feel.
5. Maintain a positive attitude
Continue to talk about school in a positive light. Your attitude towards preschool will significantly influence how your child perceives it. If they see that you’re confident and happy about their school experience, they’ll be more likely to feel the same way.
By following these tips, you’ll help your child not only survive but thrive in their new preschool environment, setting a strong foundation for their educational journey.
