Affordable Summer Activities
With a little creativity, you can both save money and enjoy the remaining summertime with your kids. Houston is full of free or cheap activities for the entire family, including:
- Children’s Museum of Houston promotional times
- Nature trails
- Swimming
- A library day
1) Children’s Museum of Houston Promotional Times
From 5-8 pm every Thursday evening, the Children’s Museum of Houston offers free admission to families. If Thursday doesn’t work for you, the museum takes $2 off your ticket after 5 pm every other day of the week. The museum offers rotating exhibits as well as permanent exhibits, all perfectly tailored to keep the little ones entertained. It’s the perfect way to wrap up summer with some educational fun!
2) Nature Trails
Find a nature preserve or park near your home and take your kids on a hike. Depending on the park you choose, you may have to pay a small entrance fee, but the cost is usually minimal. Take a few hours and spend an afternoon walking a hiking trail and observing nature!
Pro Tip: If you choose an outdoor activity, be mindful of the temperature and how quickly your kids tire out. Don’t let anyone overheat.
3) Swimming
Swimming is a classic summer activity! If your kids are old enough to swim, check out the community pool and spend a day playing in the water. Just don’t forget the sunscreen.
4) A Library Day
Not only could this be a fun outing, but it’s also a subtle way to remind your kids that school is about to start. Spend a day quietly reading at the library and allow your kids to bring a few favorite books home.
Enjoy the Remaining Summer!
As summer vacation draws to a close, make the most of the time you have left. Your kids will love a trip to a special museum or even just a day at the swimming pool. Give them something to remember throughout the upcoming school year!
