A new year is the perfect opportunity to make plans for the future. For some, this may mean the daunting task of choosing a preschool for your precious child. Early education and care can poise your child for success in the future, but what should you be looking for?

More Than Childcare

Preschool is much more than child care, particularly when the program is proven and the educators are experienced.  The benefit such care provides is invaluable to your child’s development and to your peace of mind.  Here are 3 things to look for in a good preschool.

1. Teacher Training.

Preschool teachers should be subject to mandatory background checks, possess CPR and first aid training, and have at least 24 hours of annual training. Teachers should make structured use of the curriculum, while making the learning fun and rewarding for young minds!   Also important is a low student to teacher ratio, allowing for plenty of individualized attention and care.

2. School Visit.

Consider planning a school visit with your child, to tour the facilities, meet the teachers and speak with school administrators.  A reputable preschool will encourage and facilitate such a visit, to ensure that your expectations and the school’s mission are in line. Write a list of any questions you might have before the visit so that you don’t forget anything and can make the most of your time there.

3. Determine What is Important to You.

Not all curriculum is created equal.  Determine what’s important to you and use that as your guide.  At The Lighthouse School of Excellence the curriculum is Christian-based and uses challenging exercises and purposeful repetition to reinforce concepts. In addition, creative learning is emphasised and developmental benchmarks are closely tracked.
