Fun Spring Activities

Plenty of families enjoy at-home spring activities when the weather turns warmer, while others seek out special events nearby. Of course, there’s plenty of chances for both in Houston! Between the perfect weather for outdoor play and plenty of free or low-cost children’s events, there’s lots to do with your toddlers and school-age kids. Here are just a few ideas to get you on the right track:

  1. Plant a garden
  2. Go camping
  3. Learn about bird nests
  4. Get ready for Easter
  5. Pick berries
  6. Find free events
  7. Explore nearby playgrounds

1) Plant a Garden

Most kids love to have an excuse to get their hands dirty. Visit your local plant nursery to find flowers or herbs that will bloom during this time of year. Whether you have a potted garden on your back patio or a flower explosion in your front yard, planting a garden is a great way to involve the whole family.

Pro Tip: Try planting vegetables to motivate your kids to eat healthily and save money on grocery shopping!

2) Go Camping

There’s nothing like setting up a tent beside a lake, going on a hike as a family, or sleeping under the stars. Take advantage of the beautiful Spring temperatures by camping at a nearby state park or even in your backyard!

3) Learn About Bird Nests

How many birds like to visit your backyard? Spring break is a great time to research the different bird species living near you. Learn what kind of nests they prefer or install a bird feeder to bring life to your outdoor space.

4) Get Ready for Easter

Do you have plans for Easter yet? This year, Easter Sunday is on April 12, which means we’re only a month away from celebrating the holiday. Whether you need to start collecting Easter eggs or look for a church to attend Sunday morning, Easter activities are a great way to bring your family and friends together.

5) Pick Berries

Did you know most berries start blooming late Spring time? From blueberries to strawberries and blackberries, your kids will love being able to pick their breakfast! Many berry picking farms have onsite activities and allow you to eat while you pick, making it a perfect spot to create your family’s next memory.

6) Find Free Events

With the dreary weather behind us, the number of free family activities are starting to increase around the city. Enjoy a night at an outdoor theater, take part in a nearby storytime, or take advantage of the upcoming Spring discounts. Spending time together as a family doesn’t have to cost a fortune–find free Houston events that everyone will love.

7) Explore Nearby Playgrounds

Speaking of free events, don’t forget about your neighborhood playground! Whether it’s a walk down your street or a drive in your neighborhood, your playground is a perfect place to hang out as a family. Take advantage of the great weather by reading a book, having a picnic, or pushing each other on the swingset!

Enjoy the Spring Weather!

Clearly, Houston-area families have no shortage of choices for spring activities. We only have a small window of time before the infamous Houston heat starts creeping in. Start enjoying the mild spring weather and have fun outdoors while you can!
